I'm really trying not to add any titles to my ever-growing TBR pile right now and you are not helping!! :) These all sound so good.

I have the exact same feelings about romance/Emily Henry — I’m not really interested in the genre but I’ll check out her books specifically bc I think shes a good, relatable writer. I lol’d when you said “I like pretentious bullshit” because same 😭

Also I totally endorse waiting to find a book! There was a book that came out this year that I really wanted to read, but I don’t like to buy hardcovers. Then one day I found a signed copy of that book in a nearby free little library!! It’s so gratifying to wait for a good find. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and all the book recs ❣️

I'm a librarian and these reviews are really inspiring for me. I saw Rachel Cusk at a literature festival in Denmark the other week. She was wonderful!

Hiii mauve, three summers sounds really good. parade also sounds good. I think I might get it down the line as I have outline to read. I liked August blue too - It was definitely aloof but didn't lose me at any time. I liked how the main character was sort of unknowable but you still had a good sense of her. I'm not sure how I felt about the resolution of the strange situation let's say to not spoil but my impression was as you say that it was not one where linearity was super important. Someone working in Blackwell's recommended me lost in the garden which was kind of this folksy horror about a road trip to try and get a girl's boyfriend back from a village there's an urban legend not to go to. that felt a bit like midsommar vibes or something and I really enjoyed it. It was like a good TV show. It also was about the nicest paperback to hold. I read whale which was crazy but really great, like a Korean one hundred years of solitude. Greek lessons was really good.. It was about these two characters with a somewhat shifting perspective both kind of dealing with something very isolating and a slow burn to what I'm not sure was ever explicitly romantic but them spending some time. It was a bit between the kind of vignette style of something like maybe territory of light or even Deborah levy as you say and mieko kawakami (I can't remember if you read breasts and eggs or all the lovers in the night but I like her books a lot). Umm what else - I read this mega short kind of existential horror I suppose called a short stay in hell in which a Mormon guy dies and is sent to hell for not having believed in the true religion, which is like the library of babel from the Borges story, and it had this kind of older sci fi (maybe Ursula le guin) feel but I thought it was so economical, it felt like it was a much bigger book in a good way. I didn't really click with visitation but I didn't dislike it. I have been busy lately so sadly stopped but I am reading shark heart currently which is about a husband and wife, but he is diagnosed with turning into a great white shark. I got the new iliad as I've decided to have a myths phase at some point. Also to the lighthouse as I've never read any Virginia woolf. That was my summer reading sorry about rambling it is 3am now byee thank you for the videos lately as always and take care of yourself x

I’m not a romance reader typically and share the same feelings about Emily Henry. That being said, I really enjoyed Funny Story. So if you’re ever in the mood to pick up another of hers, I recommend it!

Thanks for the recs! I’m in a massive reading slump, so good to hear some of these books can cure me! Last book I read was “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow”, which was very good. 😄 I’ll try Parade. I’ve read Outline (couldn’t get into it) and Second Place (interesting) based off your recommendation. Intriguing writer even if I’m not crazy about her books yet. I’ll try one more! 😂

I really love how you articulate yourself 😊 Gonna check out Natalia Ginzburg now!

At this point I associate Rachel Cusk and Deborah Levy exclusively with you! haha but I love them too. I'm excited to read Parade next!
Also in terms of romance/Emily Henry, I enjoyed Beach Read the most by her. I feel like it's her most serious book (ironically, given the title). But I enjoyed Book Lovers as well. I personally enjoy and have read a lot of romance (although I am a pretentious literary fiction girl at heart), but I feel like for your taste, I couldn't recommend anyone other than her. She's really as good as it gets for the genre, which says something about the quality level considering she isn't *that* great lol

I just finished Chrysalis by Anna Metcalfe, have you read it? If not, I think you might enjoy it!

Just noticed how you read a lot of women authors! Do you do that on purpose? I personally try to do that on purpose, just because I try to diversify my reading and engage more with stories created by/about women (I find that if I don’t seek out women authors on purpose I largely get recommended the voices and stories of men per default. Nothing ill about that ofc - I’m simply trying to expand my horizon)!

Cusk has a brief essay on Ginzburg in Coventry that was interesting
