Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)

Symphony No. 83 in G minor "La Poule" (1785)

00:00 - Allegro spiritoso
07:33 - Andante
16:06 - Menuet. Allegretto - Trio
19:32 - Finale. Vivace

The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, dir. Sigiswald Kuijken

"Symphony No. 83 has come down to us as 'La Poule' because of the clucking oboe that accompanies part of the second subject. The first movement (Allegro spiritoso) is dominated by a rather grim opening melody, fashioned in such a way that Haydn later could use it contrapuntally. The slow movement (Andante) is a most lively and poetic piece that uses varied dynamics and surprise repeated notes most effectively; we draw particular attention to the passage at measure 64 ff., in which we hear some of Haydn's most poetic music. The bucolic Menuet is followed by a racy Vivace in 12/8 meter, but this happy and unconcerned theme acquires tiger's claws in the development section." - H.C. Robbins Landon

Haydn is really the father of the symphony. The elegance and harmony of their compositions are amazing. Viva Haydn and his incredible and incomparable music. The symphonies are true musical masterpieces that provides us moments of unforgettable pleasure. The interpretation and direction of orchestra are superb.Bravissimo.

Questo cappelmeister( un violinista straordinario agli inizi dell’avvento degli strumenti d’epoca, della nidiata del maestro G. Leonhardt) e’ un ottimo interprete del L gusto haydniano .

One of the best Haydn simphonies. Full of marvelous melodies, armonies, modulations and zest. The beginning of Andante is absolute beauty.

This symphony was written much later than Haydn's "Sturm und drang" period, but the composer seems to evoke here that style, completely embedded in a fully mastered classicism.

my grandparents had a farm with female hens, for eggs and eventually meat... i took care of the baby chicks, i killed flies for them later, i used to call them whistling and they came... one of them became an old fat hen. i loved her... she lived for several years... her eggs were very dark colored and so good... the hens were free in our courtyard and wanted to nestle between the roses... we still have the juice roses.
i am a violin player, i like viotti and somehow, i see haydn had more ideas, regarding the first part, it sound a bit strange, other later composers used so chromatic themes, like kreutzer and rode. paganini, hmm... kept the italian stuff, and his rival charles-phillipe lafont... is not recorded yet. he composed 7 violin concertos. paganini had only 6 and some posthumous activity with the 5th (no orchestration) and the 6th was actualyy intended as a sonata, the earliest.

This is so funny. The opening notes are like a parody (of a very self-important hen).

9:15-9:25 I'd be fine with the whole symphony being just this recurring bit. It's beautiful, but I'm also guessing it's imitating a chicken strutting haha.

I often think how Parisians around 1790 would have enjoyed Three Blind Mice (4th movement) done so elegantly, making fun of their neighbors to the north, or was it just a popular tune and very familiar to them?

Very intensive first minute and incredible climax from 00:42 to 00:50...

I'm not convinced the hen motif is some kind of joke. This is a minor key symphony. Haydn didn't write many, but everyone is deadly serious.

what room was this recorded in?
sounds like a huge church... or an artificial reverb with a decay of more than 5 seconds

It is rather an inside joke but as I have told thousands of my students over the years "There is a SQUAB in every Haydn Symphony, " Nowhere more so than in Movement No 1 of Symphony no 83.. Has any other composer ever showered the world with so much pure joy? No!
