Ppl seem to forget there was a time when newspapers didn't always print stories of famous ppl and police only investigated as much as the studio allowed. Secrets were kept

My theory: it was a very stupid, horrible accident. While she walked to or got into the car, her voluminous skirts came in contact with a match or cigarette that had been thrown on the ground without being completely extinguished. The big skirts were well known fire hazards for many reasons, including the yards of flammable crinolin and the sheer number of fabric layers involved, all having their own closures, making quick removal impossible.

Hi Gabby, I did read that someone lit a cigarette and threw the match into the limo that Martha Mansfield was resting in. So sad that her dress got caught in the door, and she struggled to get out of the burning car and her stage dress. You are right that is not fair that she was cut off out of this movie!

Also, cutting her scenes was probably more practical...she couldnt do retakes, and she couldnt finish the film....how far into filming were they? They couldnt match scenes without her.

Early costume fabric was at times made of lyocel or rayon since both were inexpensive and looked like silk in a black and white film. Both are highly flammable materials. Early forms of lyocell, or viscose were often inadequately treated, and as such could have an oily film covering them, and it is possible, not likely, but still within the realm of possibility, that in a hot car the unstable fabric with friction from many layers as the individual wearing it shifted could combust.

Here is a suggestion as to the cause of Martha’s untimely demise. It was the early 1920s and movies were something relatively new. In those years, women who smoked were generally looked down on. Smoking was considered sexually suggestive and amoral. It was not a good image for a young ingenue hoping to make it big in Hollywood. Yes, the author did quote Martha’s mother who vehemently denied her daughter smoked but maybe mother didn’t know as much about her child as she thought she did. My parents, my friends and my boyfriend had no idea that I smoked. I would sneak off to a secluded hiding place and have a quick puff. Meanwhile, I was telling everyone that I thought it was a filthy habit.

Hot car and heat in Texas...maybe the windows magnified the sun and it spontaneously caught fire. Weirder things have happened but Texas is darn hot and cars.can heat well over 100 degrees.

It would be great if you could show us Woodlawn Cemetery and maybe give a little background of the people there or how they died. I love your videos, especially the vintage ones. I would love to see videos covering major disasters such as ship wrecks, building fires, railroad accidents, things like that... present day or vintage. I think it would be interesting to hear the stories surrounding them.

Tragic story. I don't know much about fire science but I've always been told not to store rags with paint, or other substances of that type, in a poorly ventilated space. Her dress was clearly made of combustible material, possibly even painted for some effect. I wonder if there could have been fumes in the car that ignited the dress or some similar explanation.

Another fantastic video, thanks Gabbie! 💜
I'd never heard of this case before. It is a strange death...
It's sad that Martha was more or less cut out of the film. Although, it would have been difficult to finish the film with Martha as the leading lady if she was no longer alive to finish the film. 😢 There was no real special effects back in those days...
Clothes back then were often made from very flammable and dodgy materials.
I guess her dress could have been set on fire on purpose. But, if someone wanted to cause harm to Martha - its unlikely they'd use a match as a weapon - so much could go wrong - the match could have blown out when thrown into the car.
I wonder if they're 100% sure that it was a match that started the fire?
Someone could have purposely lit the dress with a lighter, or something...
Also, I wonder who became the leading lady after Martha's death? That could be a possible motive if the fire was started purposely... 😮
I love your videos, they really get my mind ticking. 👍
Martha was so young, her death was such a tragedy.
RIP sweet Martha.
💜 💘 💜
P.S. Great advice about reading articles written the day of/after the incident, before rumours start. 👍👍👍
