Unreal Engine 5 on ROG Ally: Can it handle the heat?

In this video, I test the performance of Unreal Engine 5 on the ROG Ally, a new handheld gaming PC from ASUS. The ROG Ally features an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor with RDNA 3 graphics and a 7-inch Full HD 120Hz display. But can it run Unreal Engine 5.2 smoothly and without overheating? Watch me play test UE5.2 and see how the ROG Ally handles the heat.

Just a heads up, you are running your Ally in silent mode, which only runs at 10W. I have mine running on 25W and getting about 45-50fps on the third person template. Switching everything to medium gives me anywhere from 70-90fps. This is also while using a second 1080p monitor.

you should try running it using the lit > unlit mode, and then under the scalability settings, set it to low. and see how much fps you can get. I think it could be usable

I can’t run a fan made game called “The HiKe- Return to Crystal Lake”. Everytime I try to boot it up. The screen goes black while the sound is on. Afterwards, the game crashes stating “Unreal Engine is exiting due to D3D device being lost”. Any advice on how to fix this problem? I’d greatly appreciate it.

Are you going to do an update on this & test it using the right performance settings? I honestly think people are doubting the power of this thing just because it’s windows based & portable. External GPU this would definitely work & still be a beast just watch the price come down as this rog ally gets popular

also a heads up, by default, unreal engine DOES have software raytracing called Lumen while also virtual shadow maps and other things like volumetric atmosphere, volumetric clouds, etc turned on ans activated.

Wow! Excellent, Jonathan! I have an Asus ROG Phone 5s smartphone with 16GB of RAM. Now Asus has seriously decided to create competition for Steam Deck.

Interesting! I've been wondering if the ROG would do exactly this :)

I wonder how it would do with an XG mobile eGPU attached

Hey serious question: I was thinking of using this as my main computer for unreal development suite, while plugging in the 4090 Rog external XG Mobile that they have. Do you happen to have the XG Mobile, and if so, would it be possible for you to give it a shot? XG Mobile is oddly very close to realtime performance for mobile GPUs despite being external. Using a laptop dock while connecting to this device+XG Mobile should in theory give a proper mobile workstation power (GPU wise). I am just curious if CPU would bottleneck it! when not using the laptop dock, it becomes a console for the go! so like: oretty multi faceted if used.
