Note: The other figures with long hair are men not women.

The painting "The School of Athens" displays the greatest intellectuals of history (Plato, Aristotle, Pythagoras, Socrates, etc).

Hypatia of Alexandria (c. 360–415 AD) was a renowned philosopher, mathematician, and astronomer. She led the Neoplatonist school in Alexandria, teaching subjects like mathematics and astronomy. Hypatia was known for her intellectual achievements and writings. She was murdered by a Christian mob, marking a tragic end to her life and influence. Her legacy remains as a symbol of knowledge and intellectual freedom.

Even though they tried to erase her. Raphael made sure we would never forget.

Her story is so inspiring.A woman who fought for intellectual freedom and equality even in times of intense conflict.

I've also noticed that Hypatia is one of the only people looking directly at the viewer. It's like she's quietly but firmly reassuring you that she does in fact deserve a place in the school

My theory is that she is looking at the viewers of the painting and offering them to join their discussion because in the painting it looks like they are all talking. It doesn’t matter who they are or where they come from as long as you have a big idea or a big dream, she is inviting you to join in. I also believe she is giving us this look because she WANTS us to see the “imbalance” that a woman CAN have ideas just like men. It is a powerful statement really and so beautiful.

Its like she is witnessing us witnessing the painting, like she is watching us carefully asssesing each stroke and detail, pondering about the painting and going through each nook and cranny of the canvas waiting pateintly for our eyes to lock with hers. She somehow is saying to me that you cannot touch my existence let alone eliminate it. She is proud of the apparent imbalance in statements just like men. So powerful Amazing!

Man she was one of a kind. Her death was unfortunate, but she will forever be remembered.

I’m still upset about the archaeologist who was murdered for trying to protect historical sites.

The genius woman damned by her own fellow citizens. Purely for being intelligent which was controversial for that time. I love how haunting Raphael has made this painting.

Raphael was one of the first artists in that time to use real female models. Although usually from a male perspective, the Italian renaissance was had moments of deep appreciation of the feminine and paved the way for other contemporaries like Artemesia Gentileschi to present female figures from history, mythology and the bible in her own perspective.

Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino (Raphael)'s story is beautiful: he was born into affluence and power, was pressured into proposing to a cardinal's daughter, but the marriage never took place. He was in love with a baker's daughter, Margherita Luti, who became his muse and model. Such a relationship was practically forbidden in those days because of wealth/class differences, but Margherita appears in more than half his works. Shortly before he passed at the age of 37, Raphael had the good sense to dictate his will, leaving half his estate to Margherita and the other half to her father as thanks for keeping their relationship a secret.
It is believed that the image of Hypatia in this work, The School of Athens, is Raphael's beloved Margherita.
