to drop your pickaxe you must go to settings then turn on auto swap weapons and hold out a pickaxe and pick up anything

What happens if someone else picks up your pickaxe? does it actually take one of their slots? or does it not do anything? or does it change their pickaxe to yours, and makes their own pickaxe drop?
