How a drinking bird toy works

This is how a dipping bird toy/ drinking bird / dunking bird works explained. Explained with animations. A drinking bird works by cooling of the head via. evaporative cooling. That will cause the liquid (dichlormethane) inside the glass construction to condense. According to the ideal gas law, that will cause a pressure difference, sucking up all dichlormethane.

This causes the center of mass to change, and when the torque is no longer in equilibrium the bird will rotate. A smart valve at the bottom will cause the fluid to fall back - when a tube is above the water level.

Answer to the question asked at [4:08] - We need a temperature difference to run the expansion thermometer, else once expanded it would never contract and the "swinging bird" would stuck at one position.

You can't really use a normal thermometer because the liquid touching the top probably wouldn't cool the "fluid ball" at the bottom which is always hanging in air.

But you could equally well make a different version that starts with the "fluid ball" in a hot environment, and the rising of the fluid flips the thermometer lifting the container out of the hot environment.


On a side note, I don't know if you've stumbled on it, but there's a "drinking bird of the second kind" based on osmosis.
