Does a higher cost wood finish give a better result?

Does a higher cost wood finish give a better result? *Spoiler alert*: it depends. I wanted a way to compare the different finishes before I put them on my maple slab so I made this test from one of the cut-off ends. Since I was testing things I already had on hand I decided to do it based on price from least to most expensive (affiliate links below). These results are superficial based on the fact that each project and its intended use is different, each wood will give you different results, but in the end, it helped me decide what to use. I hope you find it useful!

Nice looking table! Ive always thought of Seal A Cell as base coat. It is redder/more ruby than Arm R Seal which tends to be yellower. Seal A Cell makes cherry wood pop. Excellent finishes, both of them!

Just my thought -- I prefer WB finishes because of the quick re-coat, low VOC, and easy cleanup. Using General Finishes High Performance OVER SealCoat Shellac does several great things: SealCoat warms the wood with yellow ton (what you pay for with Enduro-Var), HP is a higher durability finish than Enduro-Var, and HP dries as quickly and levels out wonderfully. Could put HP on with a trowel in a 55*F shop and still lays flat after 15mins. Best of all, they are based in Wisconsin -- as a Wisconsinite, this is a win!!

Hi Hubbard, I just want to know that as I already made a small wall shelf and I already sand it at 120 grit. I don’t want to stain so I skipped it and I need to varnish it which I’m going to take semi gloss, I’m going to 1st cost of varnish and 2nd coat of varnish, after that. Which sand paper grit I should be using after varnished 2 time? Please send me your respond to my message, I need your help. It’s for my school project.

Thank you, my name is Ali.
