I love how he had to tell us that the wings were unusual. Thank you, narrator.

Used to make paper airplane versions of these when I was a kid. Once you learned how to throw it they flew straight and level pretty damn far.

imagine having the window seat and getting blocked by that wing

“The aircraft you see is very differe…”
I didn’t know that

Of course it’s made by Lockheed Martin

Good luck servicing the engines. Also their position will not make for a quiet ride either. How does the fuel get to them, fuel lines in the wall of the cabin looks fairly dangerous. No roll stability at all so I’d bet it rocks around the long axis even with fast computer control. And pitch control looks impossible. Also why bother with windows as 50% are obstructed by the “ring-wing”. The more I look at it the more defects it has. This may fly in a sim but I doubt this could get off the ground, assuming it could be built.

Seems like an inferior design to the typical two big wings. That thing would or could be a nightmare in the air. Can only imagine how it would cope with harsh turbulence.

I spent hours upon hours trying to make an SSTO plane in KSP that had a Ring wing configuration similar, except it was swept back way more and a lot flatter. Never could get the damn thing to fly right, wasn't sure if it was the design of the wings or KSP or FARAM bugging out. I did get a sorta flyable but it was still a SOAB to fly manually. The aerodynamic data was untrustworthy to I just thought it looked cool though.

Borovaya UMMB ring wing design exists, but is much more elliptical than the graphic. X-22A had multiple ring wings. There is also Custer channel wing.

Would this actually be possible in real life? Because it looks like lower part’s high pressure would interfere with the top part, effectively making the top part an anti-wing

If some were made and it crashed, it would be a large pain in the ass for the investigators

That’s one high hangar to service those in… but make that a flattened ring and place the engines better and it might work…

Ring wings are absolutely not more lift efficient. They are slightly more drag efficient, but significantly less stable and less lift efficient than traditional wings. If your looking for better drag efficiency, good lift efficiency, stable flight, and roundness, you want a flat annular wing. Like a Geobat, (look it up), those are really freakin cool, and fly great as RC aircraft. No full scale Geobat has ever been built, but many other flat annular wings have.

I want Benedict Cumberbatch to narrate this. Preferably in character as Martin Crieff.

Especially because "ring wing" rhymes with his pronunciation of penguin.

Sucks for the people in the middle that paid extra for a window seat, just to stare at a wing lol.

How can this be fuel efficient and generate more lift when the curved part of the circle sides do not contribute to its lift?

Never see that before that must be a rocket 😂

Noway the wing is round, I never know that

"This plane is very different" hmmm i wonder y "the wings are in a circle" no shit.

And this is an animation so it is a pipe dream of Lockheed.
