Making Cutscenes is So Easy With My New Custom Plugin! | Devlog

I love to tell stories, which is why they're such a big part of game development for me. So I've created a fancy pants cutscene editor so that I can easily build events for the upcoming demo. It'll also be useful for fun little gags in these devlogs. I have already done this before with Zoe and the Cursed Dreamer. But this time I built it as a plugin inside of the Godot Engine!

This is the 4th devlog for reQuest, a 2D pixel art mini-RPG Indie Game built in the Godot Engine where you'll explore a cozy open world which you solve like a puzzle, unlocking new areas to explore and cute enemies to destroy.

Howdy! I'm going to be trying shorter more frequent videos, so let me know what you thought of this one.

idea: you could make a variation of the balloon frog that pops if you go near it or shoot it, so it's a hazard but you can use it to defeat other enemies

That cutscene system is so cool! I kinda wish the plugin was public..
And that little touch of black bars *Cheffs kiss*

The black cinematic bars are genius. I love when problems are solved with simple things like 16x256 solid color rectangles :') (I don't know if that's their exact size but it'd be funny if it was)
That plugin looks sick! Great work :D

I just went the way of using dictionaries to manipulate text, portraits, the camera's zoom, position, panning, and the puppet's/actors movement. I just lock the controls on the player, make it invisible and swap it with an identical puppet and make it visible. The dictionary uses a bunch of match statements to determine which actors/puppets to load into the scene, the dialogue, the zoom level of the camera, where it pans to and from, the portraits to display, the movement and animation of the puppets and actors, etc. When the cutscene finishes, I either just place the player where the puppet was or wait until a trigger or timer goes off and load into the next scene. I'm aping Shantae Risky's Revenge and Mega Man Zero's cutscene systems, though. It seems like the cutscene system will vary by the type of game you're making.

I really enjoy watching the new series and I’ve noticed one thing: I really like the idea of that jumping enemy and that spider… could you please make a tutorial for that ? That would be super cool! Keep up the good work 👍

Making cutscene systems has been the hardest and most frustrating parts of game development for me. It's so easy to just mess up everything and feel like starting all over again would just be easier.

Just curious, have you thought about combining this game with the world of Zoe and the Cursed Dreamer?

Maan this sun reminds me one from Super Mario Bros. 3, World 2, Quicksand level.

Would this game be in any sort of continuity with Zoe? The art and feel seem similar enough.
