The Arkham games are a good example of this!
Yeah you could just mash square or just do silent takedowns and get by.
But you can also take down enemies in different ways and build insanely high combos.
And that’s not to mention the whole style thing too. The games have the perfect skill floor and ceiling

I love watching people demonstrate the skill ceiling of Sekiro. That game looks like an anime when it's played at peak efficiency

Dishonored is a good example of this. The skill floor isn’t too high, but when you watch people like StealthgameBR play it, you see just how high the skill ceiling is.

My son and I play spiderman a lot. He’s only 9 and pretty much holds down R2 to swing with a few zips in there. Whenever he asks me to help him and watch’s how I swing through the city he’s in awe. Flips, wall runs, falling to ground and launching. Basically taking full advantage of every skill you earn throughout the game. That’s why I love Spider-Man. My son can play and beat it/have fun but as an adult you can do the same. Amazing game

Skate 3 is one of the best games I can think of in terms of being really accessible and having a tall ass skill ceiling

DMC and the entire spectacle fighter genre are testimony of skill ceilings in single player games

I really don't see why some people say skill floor and ceiling discussion should be saved for competitive games since they very clearly impact how interesting and/or fun the gameplay is regardless of if youre fighting NPCs or real players

Zelda totk got that handled just become an engineering genius and the ceiling is a skylight 😂

Best example of this is DMC5: you can probably beat the game on normal with 2 or 3 moves/combos but there's SO MUCH you can learn and do and it's feels awesome once you improve
Edit: I made about 15 spelling mistakes

Devil May Cry is a pretty good example. Spamming light attack is usually enough to win, but you can string together combos in pretty neat ways for style points

devil may cry and bayonetta are objectively the best examples of this, sure you could go through the game using like 2 or 3 weapons or combos, but you're never gonna have that SMOKIN' SEXY STYLE

Devil May Cry is another great example!

You could mash triangle and the hordes will eventually all die in Normal Mode

But if you want to be stylish, reach SSS Combos, and do any of the higher difficulties, you'll have to learn how to tume your attacks, weapon switching and Style Actions

People who think there's no skill level for single player play the game on easy and still die😂

Part of the reason I'm so madly in love with the Devil May Cry series is that they are the epitome of "low skill floor, high skill ceiling". If you have even the tiniest bit of skill in action games, you can get through any game in the series just fine. You might have to turn down the difficulty, but you can do it. However, there's always more to do. More skills to buy in the shop, more difficulties to unlock, more floors in the Bloody Palace, more combos to learn. It would take you years to hit the skill ceiling on any given game (aside from 1 and ESPECIALLY 2), and it's just so fun.

Such nice colours and textures. Great mod.

Ultrakill is an amazing example of a high skill ceiling. Every gun can work together to chain combos and the most insane strategies are possible.

I’m surprised that people are questioning the need or role of a skill ceiling in single player games. Hell they came way before multiplayer ones, so it’s been around for ages now. Great explanation as usual!

A great example is hi-fi rush in where you can attack over and over again till you win but if you attack on rhythm and use combos you can do heavy damage and do it quick

I personally think that most single player games are better at higher difficulties as you have to engage more in the gameplay and use every mechanics to your advantage instead of just relying on a few of them.

Love this explanation.

I might not be interested in the types of games you cover on your channel, but I do appreciate any content that allows players to both understand games better and think about how mechanics in games benefit the player's experience.
