A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched the NROL-108 mission from Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on 19 December 2020, at 14:00 UTC (09:00 EST). Following stage separation, Falcon 9’s first stage landed on Landing Zone 1 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The first stage booster (Block 5 B1059) previously supported launch of SpaceX’s 19th and 20th cargo resupply missions to the International Space Station, a Starlink mission, and the SAOCOM 1B mission. The NROL-108 satellite was launched for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) and it was SpaceX’s second mission for the NRO.

It probably takes less work and resources to control it coming back down from space than it would take to launch it into space. Humans get lazy and have gotten used to the idea of just let it fall with parachutes into the ocean, and because it worked once it has taken us decades to realize its not difficult to use the same thrusters that shoot it up to bring it down. lol.
