Wow!!! I been lucky enough to see Michael Beschloss speak a few times at Stanford and as a historian he is a national treasure. He has not been and will never be politically motivated in his historical accounts and every word he speaks can trusted as fact. He is never dramatic or hyperbolic which is why this sobering 1 minute video is so utterly powerful. "Our democracy is being stolen minute by minute. This is not a drill. Never before since Jamestown and Plymouth Rock has American civilization been in this kind of danger".

I am Italian you must know that Mussolini took power in an almost legal way, the first years was the premier in coalition with other parties, after the murder of Giacomo Matteotti his political opponent the other parties in protest abandoned the parliament (serious mistake). Mussolini closed it and never reopened it, getting rid of all the opposition and starting the real dictatorship. He himself years later admitted that for a few days he feared being arrested or killed. Hitler did the same 10 years inspired by Mussolini.

Problem with the US system is based too much on goodwill and not real check and balances. Here in Italy and other European countries we learned our lesson and we have real mechanism put in place to prevent potential dictator to come to power. You need to rethink your entire division of power system to make it more practical and less idealistic
