Kamala Harris sworn in as the first female vice-president in US - BBC News

Kamala Harris has just been sworn in as the first female vice-president in US history.

She was sworn into office by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who made history in 2009 as the first Latina on the top court.

Can’t believe some of the vitriol in the comments section. Whatever you think of Biden+Harris (I personally like them) we should all be hoping that they do a good job because although some people in the UK don’t like it, America is still our most important ally. I’m happy they’re in now, finally the absolute disaster of an administration that went before them is gone. You can disagree with me totally that’s fine, I’ve just given my opinion. P.S. Harris is definitely eyeing up the presidency in 2024, watch this space.

Vice-President Harris is not 'African-American' by origin. Her father Prof Donald Harris isn't 'Black American' (or 'African-American'). He is Jamaican and was born a subject of King George VI in 1938. He has apparently also taken US citizenship in recent years but has not given up his Jamaican citizenship as far as is known. For most of his life and when Kamala was born he was a Jamaican citizen.'
Kamala Harris's mother wasn't 'Indian-American' either - she was a citizen of India when Kamala was born. By contrast Nikki Haley is 'Indian-American'.
