I remember how people chastised him for missing this free kick. I acknowledge that when you have one last kick of the ball at 1-0 down in a WC final, expectation goes awry. People tend to be at their most naive when they're desperate. Of course, , the kick would've had to been inch-perfect in both direction and power to get over the wall and somehow stun Neuer from that distance. You can sense the anticipation and the last shred of hope emanating throughout the stadium as Messi takes aim, as if everybody in unison is praying to the heavens for a miracle. That expectation explodes the moment Messi hits it but quickly fades as the ball soars high above the goal. That tantalising waiting in between the foul and the free kick perfectly describes the inflated expectations people have always had on Messi to save the day, no matter what. Eight years later, he is still Argentina's most important player (by some distance), but these days, he has a solid unit backing him with individuals who play every single game as if it were their last. I'm glad Scaloni figured out that one player can't win you games and that he created a functioning, cohesive team as opposed to the one-man show that had defined Argentina in previous years. Messi is the GOAT, but he needed help, and him winning the World Cup was justice served cold. In my opinion, it isn't egregious to call it the most deserved trophy for an athlete ever.
