Mat, you're right! Spagonia is a reference to Sonic Unleashed. It's a location based off of various locations in Western Europe; predominantly Italy, France, England and Spain.

There were SO MANY references in this game, and the devs were awesome enough to add settings for the runner segments for those of us that just wanted to enjoy the story. I loved playing this and would honestly love more like it!
