Great talk David - thank you. Reskilling does sound like the key... I'm optimistic that current developlments in Skills Management will help fill this gap. The latest HR software helps organisations to identify and manage their employees' skills... (some of which may be hidden from plain sight or unused in current roles) and then create new jobs or projects for employees or indeed to train / retrain employees in critical skills. One thing I wanted to check: You mention that companies are investing in automation in order to help deal with the lack of skilled workers. Automation helps replace transactional, simple, repeatable tasks, which likely means a reduction in the "unskilled" or simple part of jobs.. and as a knock on effect, a cost saving for the company. Is your view that companies are doing this but instead of reinvesting in their existing staff through reskilling, they are just going to market and hiring new staff in?
