Small plane makes emergency landing on New York beach

Unfortunately I too have pranged a vtail not like this and it seems like you have All the time to get setup, you don't, things happen fast but in this case I don't think landing gear was a good choice but that's easy for me to say, when I had engine out I did keep gear up and choose to get prop level and put in the dirt . Fortunately I had friends with a crane the damage to lower fuselage was minor took me a week hard to get friends to handle bucking bars and what the rivet head should look like!!! But that was decades ago and it got Tip Tanks

Why did he put gear down at the last minute? If you’re off field, keep the gear up.

I have 120 hours in a v-tail like this one, and have lost an engine in it as well. I’ve been in this seat. Fly it like a normal landing minus the gear. The nerves are wicked when you get here, I know, but your ability to survive is fully dependent on how well you’re able to fly it though the crash.

Yep he blew it he was doing good maybe flying a little slow with the gear up but then he did something really stupid, he decided to put the gear down, well my friend that added a whole bunch of drag and as you can see the airplane fell out of the sky like a rock when he did that he basically destroyed the airplane when he had a brain fart by putting the gear down, dumb dumb dumb
