I remember that. One of the old Digimon toys did that too. It was the D-Tector and it scanned barcodes, tvs.. sometimes actually scanned your hand as well

Even as a kid born around 2010 I must say the 90's-early 2000's toy line is the coolest

my mom and my aunts apparently used to have these when they were kids/teens. My grandfather (their dad) had bought them all one in the US(0 clue how, but I'm gonna assume they were some being sold in the US). They were playing with them, battling, whatever and one day, (aunt1) had this marking on her leg from one of her socks(that stripped part at the top portion of the sock) which was embedded into her leg temporarily. My mom thought it would be funny to scan it's and it worked! (She does not remember what the monster was unfortunately), so my 4 other aunts proceeded to scan it and aunt1 started crying 😭😭😭 silly story
