The reason why British plugs are so large is because originally appliances in the UK were sold without plugins so you had to wire your own plug and the plugs themselves usually encompass a built-in fuse. They also have it so all except for the ground are countersunk in that way you cannot electrocute yourself when pulling the plug out. The American plug design is actually very outdated and has been in operation since about the 1910s.

The American outlet is the definition of if it ain't broke dont fix. We will run high voltage through 2 flat prongs, no questions asked.

why is it as big as a US 50 or 60 amp outlet(thats 12500-15000W!)
limited to 13A
and cant even handle 10 amps continuously without needing an "electric vehicle grade" outlet for anything that draws more than 8 amps for 20 minutes
plus they still use undersized cable in both the walls and the power cords!

Honestly American plugs are the best. They are small, work, and we have so many ADAPTERS!!!

America uses the saying "if it ain't broke don't fix i" to another level

In UAE we used British plugs, way more stable and properly secure

As a european, we value efficiency. The british plugs take up too much space. The american ones are pretty good, but the european 2 pin system is by far the most space efficient. Our plugs dont even have to be round or square, since we dont need the 3rd prong.

I mean they both are good in their own ways, American ones are small and don’t need all three pins to work, and you can shove so many on a extension cord

Ah yes, America the place where they make it work when it definitely should not

I had 2 power strips that broke, one that stopped working and another that’s plug broke off the ground pin, just cut the good cable off and the bad head off, stripped 2 inches of each wire spliced them and duck taped them to insulate, works fine now, and it’s got longer reach.

As an American I will be installing a UK outlet in one room of my house. It will be 220v in my kitchen. I have an electric kettle that I use all of the time and I have heard hooking it up to 220 will make it boil even faster than it already does which is insane.

Europlug is a lot better than the US one and Schuko-plugs are compatible with Europlug. Also running at 240v as compared to 120v in the US makes everything a lot more efficient. Most houses are powered three-phased, with a single phase going to outlets themselves and therefore have access to 400v using CEE-plugs, that can go up to 128A at 400v. The UK sockets are also pretty awesome the way that the ground can barely get disconnected first and also an in-built fuse. The US-plugs have no security features and no advantages.

i work for hotels so i can say for sure british plugs get looser faster than their freedom counterparts and also they waste so much space, its like playing with jumbo legos
