OneMic Series - WORTH - Care

OneMic - the minimalist recording series by John Cuniberti demonstrates that an entire band can be recorded with only one AEA R88 stereo ribbon microphone in one take. Each recording session is shot in 4k video on a Sony a7RII by filmmaker Nathaniel Kohfield. What makes this series so different from other live performance videos is that the artist is in complete control of his/her presentation. This means that the sound, balance, dynamics and stereo image is decided upon at the moment of creation, not in post production. The artist (band) is responsible for the final product. There is no editing of the audio or video. It’s as honest as it can be including imperfections. This organic presentation isn’t limited to “acoustic” music as seen with live classical and folk music. In this series veteran recording engineer John Cuniberti records bands with electric guitars and drums that would normally require a multi-mic, multi-track approach. This is not the first time this has been done but this technique was quickly forsaken soon after the multi-track tape recorder was invented and with it a loss of a level of musical intimacy. The OneMic series demonstrates the positive aspects of the minimalistic recording process of the 1930s but will be captured on modern stereo recording equipment.

Impressive balance for such a complex ensemble. The bass/kick balance was great, as was the rejection of the Rhodes in spite of its proximity to the mic, thanks to the null off the bottom.

I love this mic as it is ribbon they sound so natural like our own ears. JUst add a top of high end if needed. My only problem with this mic is the noise floor inherent to it. Did you used an AEA special ribbon mic preamp to avoid that ? Did you tracked on tape ? Mine has a perpetual noise on the left channel. Thanks for the art of recording ;)

Hey, I had a question for you, if you have the time! I'm really inspired by these recordings and the capability of the r88. I was looking on AEA's website, and found the N8 as well, from reading around, it's the same design as the active r88 in a mono microphone, and then the stereo package gives it the capability to be set up as blumlein.

My question is, do you think the stereo bar, with its square shape, even set up in the null of the blumlein array, would make some weird things happen with reflections? I would like the added flexibility, and active is much better for my preamp setup, but I would also like to use the n8 in the same way you are using the r88 here.

Let me know any thoughts you might have! Thanks so much.
