He actually holds a world record for the longest verbal way to phrase "I don't know."

The second one is interesting. It's like Richard Dawkins said: just because you can put words together in a cohesive question doesn't mean that sentence has any real meaning. Some questions are just nonsensical and have no answer.

The example Dr. Greene goes onto is asking for directions to the North Pole. You can ask someone now and they'll point you North, you can keep asking until you're at the North Pole and you ask Santa Claus "How do I go further North?", that's when he looks at you and says: "That doesn't make any sense."

If time ITSELF started at the Big Bang, then he’s right. To ask what happened BEFORE is a nonsensical question.
Sigh

That is the exact same answer Neil Degrasse Tyson gave

I think that I have a good example for a similar question that doesn't mean anything:
What is beyond the Eastern/Western end of the Earth?
This question is meaningless because the world is a sphere, so there is no East or West "end".
Another meaningless question can be:
Where on the surface of the Earth is the moon located?
(Time is a dimension in our universe, so there is nothing "before" our universe, because "before" means a moment in our time dimention)

If time started at the big bang then it seems like nothing could have existed prior to the event. That said it is a mind bender of a question.

"Well, there are two possibilities: something or nothing."

The entire universe, past and future, could be a single object like a book. But because of our linear experience of time we can only experience it only page at a time

The concept of time doesn't exist before the big bang, so there is actually no "before" only "after"

It's just like you can only keep going north until you're at the North Pole and then you can't keep going north anymore

Video cut too early. I think he might have been going to elaborate that the question assumes the existence of linear time and if time only comes into existence with the big bang there is no before the big bang. I didn't watch the full video though.

For comprehension, ponder the fact that time was invented by humans. Clocks.. the whole concept.

There's only a past and present because we existed to percieve it. Our life is limited to how long it takes the earth to revolve around the sun say.. 80 times, so we understand there is a beginning and end to our lives. We make the mistake of applying this idea to the universe.

Perhaps.. the universe had no beginning, and will have no end.

Impossible to imagine, but that's a human limitation.

Of course it doesn't mean anything. If "The Big Bang" was the beginning of Space, it was also the beginning of Time. Space Time. They are two perspectives of the Same Thing... They don't, never did, exist separately.
Like a "Top" cannot exist without a "Bottom"...
Two parts of the Same Thing.

All the energy absorbed by black holes culminated until it was released. Energy and matter doesn't disappear it's just stored somewhere else

the first theory is written clearly in all ancient Hindu religious texts of Shree Bhagwat Geeta, Vedas and Upnishada !
and to date none is able to rectify or falsify it !
hence, we believe it religiously ! 🙏😊

I sit around and think about this all the time. That and where are all the missing socks ?

It expands and contracts like many things in life it’ll stop expanding, then start contracting back to .0 then explode back out for eternity.

I heard a good analogy recently relating to the second imagine going back in time toward the big bang is like walking north toward the north pole at the pole there is no more north, asking where is north if here is as redundant as asking what happened before the big bang
