Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder

Roula Choueiri, MD, division chief of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics at UMass Memorial Children's Medical Center, explains the nature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as a neurological issue versus a common misconception that ASD is a mental health disorder. Dr. Choueiri notes that an autistic child presents with deficits in two combined areas: social and communication delays, and repetitive behaviors or interests. However, she stresses that the appearance of some of these behaviors does not always mean an ASD diagnosis. Parents should speak to their child's pediatrician about any concerns.
