Porco's(Marco) Best Line

"The good ones were the ones who died" is a sentiment I have seen from so many veterans. I used to work at a historic site dedicated to war dead, and it was so common. I remember a quote, I can't remember who it was from, but it was an officer of returning WW1 soldiers who said to demobilising troops "Remember, you're not the heroes. The heroes are the ones we left behind"

Rosso is one of the most realistic depictions of a grizzled, nihilistic war veteran in almost any movie I've ever seen - animated or not

The first time I listened to this I thought he was saying "or maybe i'm dead and life is a pig", full stop. I hate to admit it but I burst out laughing.

My favourite line in the movie is when he’s reading the paper: “porco rosso dead or alive? Good question.”

While Miyazaki did not admit this. I do believe essentially he died when his friends died (at least his soul did). He cursed himself as punishment for killing good boys (other pilots) and not dying with the other pilots he cared so much about. He eventually died when that Air Force showed up at the end of the movie and the spell was broken. The love of the mechanic girl helped to convince him that life was still beautiful.

Michael Keaton was one of Disney's most perfect casting choices - he so totally understands the character, right down to the Bogart similarities;

HOLY HELL i only watched it with subtitles i had no idea how smooth his voice was i have to watch the whole thing again just because of this video

edit: two months later i did watch it, i also watched princess mononoke for the first time, gotta say i had almost forgotten how magical Ghibly movies are
