Porco Rosso's best line. I do not own anything in this video. All are credited to Hayao Miyazaki.

"The good ones were the ones who died" is a sentiment I have seen from so many veterans. I used to work at a historic site dedicated to war dead, and it was so common. I remember a quote, I can't remember who it was from, but it was an officer of returning WW1 soldiers who said to demobilising troops "Remember, you're not the heroes. The heroes are the ones we left behind"

Rosso is one of the most realistic depictions of a grizzled, nihilistic war veteran in almost any movie I've ever seen - animated or not

Not gonna lie, when people kept praising Porco Rosso I wondered why. I finally gave it a watch just now and can understand why. Did not expect that many grim undertones.

I love how dark and real the emotions can get in ghibli movies. It gives a sense that these are real characters with flaws and a history we never get to see, only hear snipits of

As someone who hasn't seen this movie I came into this with a "wonder what that funny pig man is gonna say" mindset and, oh boy, I wasn't disappointed. Needn't to say that this movie is now on my watch list

"I'd rather be a pig than a fascist " that is top tier also

War doesn't determine who's right, only who's left.

The first time I listened to this I thought he was saying "or maybe i'm dead and life is a pig", full stop. I hate to admit it but I burst out laughing.

"A pig who doesn't fly is just an ordinary pig."
That is actually subtly deep.

My favourite line in the movie is when he’s reading the paper: “porco rosso dead or alive? Good question.”

While Miyazaki did not admit this. I do believe essentially he died when his friends died (at least his soul did). He cursed himself as punishment for killing good boys (other pilots) and not dying with the other pilots he cared so much about. He eventually died when that Air Force showed up at the end of the movie and the spell was broken. The love of the mechanic girl helped to convince him that life was still beautiful.

Michael Keaton was one of Disney's most perfect casting choices - he so totally understands the character, right down to the Bogart similarities;

I love how they cast top tier actors to voice the characters in Studio Ghibli movies, can’t wait to see Boy and the Heron.

"It seems to me he was telling me I was a pig, and maybe I deserved to be all alone."
Such a relatable quote.

That's literally just Miyazaki talking about how he feels.

My favorite line was when he and Fio were refueling.
"Farewell to freedom in the Adriatic and to days of wild abandoned."
"What is that, Shakespeare?"
"No, it's Porco."

Still my favorite Ghibli film, something about this film just sticks with me ever since I was a kid.
