Let’s talk about how to get rid of hiccups fast. A hiccup happens when the diaphragm goes into spasm and interrupts the vocal cords.

Hiccup triggers:
• Laughing
• Excessive talking
• Eating too fast
• Stress

Basically, hiccups are caused by having too much oxygen and not enough CO2. When people have too little CO2, their pH becomes too alkaline. A symptom of alkalosis is hiccups. According to a study done on cats, hiccups stop when you increase CO2.

The best way to get rid of hiccups is to increase CO2 by doing any of these things:
• Hold your breath
• Drink water upside down
• Breath into a paper bag
• Breath through your nose slowly (5 sec. in 5 sec. out)

I hold my breath and relax my diaphragm. I had noticed in the past that when I had hiccups my stomach felt tight, so I started relaxing my stomach and holding my breath. It works for me!

I raise my arms straight up and they're gone in an instant, every time. My nan taught me that when I was 4 years old. ♡

I always get hiccups when I drink carbonated beverages. What always helps for me is drinking water slowly and continuously until the hiccuping stops. That always works for me. Thanks for your helpful and useful videos, Dr. Berg!!

I hold water in my mouth and swallow just as I feel I'm about to hiccup which prevents it from happening. Do this 5 -10 times and they stop. It's never failed me.

This might sound insane but I learned how to stop my hiccups by doing very slow and deep inhales, calming my brain and thinking to myself “I am no longer going to hiccup” I do my best not to anticipate the next hiccup. And I swear to god it stops instantly. I even tried this method with friends and it worked! They were astounded. I’m convinced more than ever that The mind is a very powerful tool. And we probably can do far more then we’re taught with it.

9 out of 10 times, my hiccup starts *THE VERY MOMENT* I put my head on the pillow to go to sleep... When i hicc, I don't play around, I do it loud and aggressively, and I don't stop... I can literally hicc for 2-4 hours and there's no sleep that night. I'm familiar with the other 3 methods, which never work, but the paperbag one is new to me. I'll try that one. Definitely worth a try. And the explanations as to the why, how and when seem reasonable to me.

On a sidenote, my hiccups have drastically decreased in frequency to now being quite rare since I started on healthy Keto, so clearly something has changed. Eric Berg has been my main mentor on the keto path, and it has been a major success, major benefits, so much appreciation from me. I'm grateful.

You did it again! Thank you Dr Berg! While watching this video, I exhaled and didn't breathe in for about 40 seconds... Hiccups stopped. I also like using mind over body control (when I can) and that works if I can concentrate enough. This time, after yesterday's hernia surgery, there was just too much discomfort for that. Thanks again Dr!

Try to breathe in and out at the same time. It's impossible to do so, but it forces the air up out of the diaphragm, and it works!

Hiccups are also caused by pressure on the vagus nerve.
From the Mayo Clinic:
"Nerve damage or irritation A cause of long-term hiccups is damage to or irritation of the vagus nerves or phrenic nerves, which serve the diaphragm muscle. Factors that may cause damage or irritation to these nerves include: A hair or something else in your ear touching your eardrum A tumor, cyst or goiter in your neck"

So glad I searched Dr. Berg’s videos for help with my hiccups! I have been coughing due to a cold, which probably caused the hiccups which I think then caused my stomach ph to be off causing gas buildup in my stomach. Totally makes sense.

Dr. Berg, I have R-CPD (inability to burp for others reading), and my hiccups usually occurs when I intake excessive carbonated beverages. At one point, my hiccups have lasted for over a month without pause. Are my hiccups also likely to be related to the CO2/O2 disassociation curve or would it be necessary to take treatment to train my ability to burp? — It is worth noting that during the month of where the hiccups persisted, I do believe I had excessive levels of stress which would have affected my O2 intake.

thank you for this, I suffered hiccuping fits for a few years after my car accident but maybe a different kind of one, caused by trauma. they were very loud long deep and would last more than a 24 hour window, cause me to lose my voice and my throat would close..my neighbors could hear they were so loud.. I did get trauma to my ribcage and could feel vibration and snapping around my diaphram also it affected my heart, there was an issue there and gurgling.. My GP said the only time he ever saw those to be after major heart surgeries, they put me on high dose of baclofen.. so happy to be over those days.
