If Wookiees were a real species native to Earth, they would probably be derived from bears. Wookiees in my opinion, due to having claws, a rhinarium, muzzle and growl-based vocalizations don’t particularly resemble simian primates. While Prosimian primates do resemble Wookiee to an extent. I think real world bears, if given time, have a higher probability of producing sentient, bipedal animals than most other mammals.

I think Wookiees in the Star Wars universe probably share a common ancestor with Ewoks. I believe Wookiees being descended from Ewoks makes sense. The Ewoks look even more bear-like than Wookiees. Ewoks transplanted to Kashyyyk could have gradually grown larger, stronger and more diverged from their original ursine ancestor.

Seem to remember a female wookiee in the Thrawn trilogy books being able to speak human and saying Chewbacca actually was not normal and had a speech impediment. Guess this wasn't carried through into further canon...or my memory is fuzzy that being 30yrs ago.
