Howard High’s football field is only used for practices. Like most schools in Wilmington DE, they play their home games as Abessinio Staidum.

The one in the Thumbnail is actually the most brilliantly designed Multi Function Field I have ever seen. You could run a Baseball Tournament with two fields at the same time in the Football Offseason.

NASCAR is actually planning on COMING BACK to Bowman Gray Stadium for the Busch Clash in 2025, should be a very interesting race to witness in person

6:59 logo is centered on the soccer field. Soccer field extends past the endzone

I was sitting here going "I should tell him about Prep's practice field". Then 11:54 hits and I just go "OH SHIT!!!". A couple things about it:

- The building with the rooftop pool is actually the new Prep Athletic Center. At least the lower levels are, we sold the air rights to a condo developer, so there's condos right above it.
- Those train tracks aren't for normal trains, those are for the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail. So the train noise isn't that bad. And there's a stop right at the corner next to the building to the left.

But you missed the best part: If you look again on the side opposite the tracks, there's a chunk taken out of the field. The end zone doesn't go all the way back. The owner of the Golden Cicada bar on the corner there refused to sell to the school, so the field originally was only 92 yards, not 100. Now they have the whole 100, but they just took a chunk out of one end zone, so THERE IS A WALL IN THE ENDZONE. Not next to it, IN it.

Oh, and that's the field that Steelers All-Pro Minkah Fitzpatrick used to practice at before going to Alabama. (The school doesn't actually *play* there, however)

14:30 Howard uses that as a practice field and don't use it to play actual football games. They play their games at Salesianum's Abessinio Stadium. I went to the elementary school right next to it 30 years ago when the field when the field was not there and was actually a softball field, and played on the playground right by it.

5:59 It used to annoy me whenever people called a NASCAR stock car simply "a NASCAR, " and it still doesn't sound quite right, but I gave it some more thought and whoever came up with that acronym in the first place, whether it was Bill France Sr. himself or someone else in that meeting at the Streamline Hotel, I don't actually know, they probably made it spell out -CAR at the end on purpose, so they might've meant all along for us to call them NASCARs the same way we call IndyCars IndyCars. I'll allow it.

I was at that stadium in Allentown earlier this year for a Drum Corps show. It's on a massive hill that is a huge pain in the ass to climb back up if you have to go down to the bottom for any reason. The paths on both sides of the stadium are extremely steep and probably send at least a few people to the hospital every year. Oh, and the extra stands were absolutely necessary, the place was packed.

2:30 I played here in middle school. It never really occurred to my 12 year old brain just how odd it is to have the side of the field just be the school. I guess I was always just worried about how the hell we would come back from a 20 point deficit if you wanted to stay in playoff contention. Those guys always kicked our asses. They were our biggest rival too which made it worse.

J Birney Crum in Allentown actually does sellout regularly for what’s basically a marching band contest in early august. The really lopsided shape works really well since these contests can only sell tickets for the home stand in any stadium, and it’s been a staple event for that stadium for decades.

Mission (SF) plays their varsity home games at Kezar Stadium (where the 49ers used to play!)...a number of local high schools (my alma mater included) play there, since real estate is so tight in the city...

Fun fact about J. Birney Crum stadium in Allentown. Because of its odd layout and acoustics, it makes for an ideal venue for marching bands, which is why it annually hosts the Collegiate Marching Band Festival, where roughly 20 college marching bands from the Mid-Atlantic and New England gather every October.

The Williamsbridge Oval was apparently built on a closed reservoir, and the Williamsburg Reservoir was distinctively saucer- or capsule-shaped. As New York found new water sources, the undersized, excavated natural lake was drained in the 1920s and turned over to the Parks Department during the Depression.

D3 SUNY Morrisville in Morrisville, New York installed a black turf field in 2023. They said it wasn’t going to get much hotter than a green turf field, which still isn’t good, but the really intense sun exposure is that area is in July, so maybe by mid August it isn’t so bad.

Boise State actually has a trademark on any kind of turf field that isn’t green. They typically grant permission to anyone who asks as long as they agree to not use specific terms when talking about their colored turf in marketing or press materials, but Morrisville is apparently the first high school or college to install one without asking permission first. It’s unlikely Boise State would take any action against a tiny D3 state school on the other side of the country, who isn’t using a blue field, especially since they have not tried to enforce their trademark monetarily against anyone yet.

11:06 Actually, each summer, there is a 2-day period where thousands visit the stadium for DCI Eastern Championships, it is a very cool stadium I will say, pretty good use of space.

Fun fact: NASCAR returns to Bowman Gray in 2025 as the new exhibition race replacing the LA Coliseum.

I work in Sharon and have a bunch of friends that went there. That entry is to the locker rooms / gym it is very one sided. No they aren’t sharing resources. Towns been in decline for 30 years. The steel mills left and it’s been downhill since.

I’ve been to the Belle Vernon stadium and the color of the field in person is less “puke yellow” and is more similar to the color of sand. It kind of looks like a beach rather than grass or turf from the stands.
