This is exactly why there are barely any mummies left. (Not counting losses from being eaten by animals/decomposed/stolen etc) Almost all Egyptian pepole were burried like this. Not much left of em today.

What’s wild is that I’ve had to write about this for my masters classes, and it’s 100% true. Europeans were obsessed with medical cannibalism and the idea that the dead could cure them. They thought mummies had what’s called Bitumen in them, which would cure ailments. Wanna know what we use that for today? Construction, adhesives, and for water proofing materials. What’s even more wild is that it’s estimated around 70 million mummies were found in Egypt, and they’re almost all gone. Europeans thought they would cure epilepsy from consuming mummified people. Another part was that they believed mummies “spirits” were still contained in the wrappings and body. They drank the mummies blood, and then ate parts of them. Wild how only 200-300 years ago, medicine was so backwards that cannibalism was a relevant, medical practice.
