In special operations, as in life, if you are to improve you must continue to do better than yesterday and that is a challenge. It is a phase of continuous improvement, like Luminox.

Never let up, always be your best and continue to do better than you've done before. You will not always succeed, but you must always believe you will succeed. Anything short of that will lead to failure.
Yesterday is done, today's tasks are before me. There are only two rules in life - improve or deteriorate. That means there is no mediocre. It is a law of nature called entropy. And, if you are going to continuously improve you cannot slack off but must meet new challenges and succeed. Every success means that the next challenge will be more arduous. If it is not, then it is not a challenge.

All of the thing said above are SEAL principles and values. Successful trainees bring those values with them to BUD/S and SQT. If they don't, they fail. You will see who has those inherent values at graduation.
