My favorite modern classic is Slaughterhouse-5 (but also just anything written by Kurt Vonnegut too. His short stories are amazing!)

I was pleasantly surpised to see Zamyatin's We on the list. I'm a bit of a fan of that book and also 1984 and Brave New World too. It's nice to see someone actually recognizing We.

Pale Fire, The Magic Mountain, Naked Lunch, and White Noise are on my TBR list. I would add an Ian McEwan novel or two, possibly Saturday and/or Atonement or The Cement Garden. I would also add a McCarthy book such as Blood Meridian.

Such a fantastic thing, when I come to a list in which I haven't read a single book mentioned.

Really enjoyed this list, and happy to find some new recs in it! Can't stop myself from leaving my own top 10 (in no order, lol):

- Pale Fire by Nabokov
- The Man without Qualities by Musil
- The Magic Mountain by Mann
- anything Kafka, but maybe the Trial in particular?
- an HP Lovecraft collection/novella
- Naked Lunch by Burroughs
- If On a Winter's Night a Traveller by Calvino
- White Noise by DeLillo
- Blood and Guts in High School by Acker (I mean I'm currently reading it but it's SO good!)
- The Stepford Wives by Levin

And TS Eliot! (I know this is cheating)

I think. Not sure at all lol.

A fine list sir. I prefer Woolf's to the lighthouse, but as far as most modernist I think that is the waves. However, I love your choice of midnight's children. I will go and search out We thanks for the suggestion.

I didn’t like 1984 much so I will look out for We instead! Haven’t read many of these, but I definitely want to read Captain America and loved that you included it here. In Cold Blood is great (that’s the only one of these I’ve read so far). 😬

I know youre not big on McCarthy but both his books Blood Meridian and All The Pretty Horses would be on my list. I feel like McCarthy has become a bit of an eyeroll choice for many (heard some equating him to dude-bro literature (he has som toxic fans)) but his language to me is so haunting and beautiful. Also The Peregrine by JA Baker. The prose is so good.

I thought you were going to mention A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry when you started talking about Partition. I haven't read Midnight's Children but I'd certainly call A Fine Balance a modern classic.

Great selection! I love that you included Akira, which I adore. I have yet to read many modern classics, but my list would definitely include: Lolita (one of the greatest displays of unreliable narration ever written), One hundred years of solitude (I'm from South America and this novel, apart from being beautiful, has been a great influence in Latin American literature) and 1984 (I've never cried so hard reading science fiction)

My personal choice.
A Kestrel for a Knave by Barry Hines.
Phenomenal depiction of childhood and the local community explored in such a honest to the point emotional depth, character and the limits of the education system.

Oooh...a list! I would nominate One hundred years of solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Beloved by Toni Morrison. I must put in an Aussie book...perhaps Monkey Grip by Helen Garner because it lifted Aussie literature out of farmers and drovers or war themed stories and into (then contemporary) urban early adulthood of the 1970s.

Salman Rushdie is also my favorite author, and I agree with you about it being the best novel of the 20th Century. I think you'd like Roberto Bolano.

It’s amazing how many of these I’ve read, and I’m a manga reader! 😅 Edit: yes, Orlando is fantastic!

Wow, that's a great list! Glad to see We, Metropolis, Captain America, and In Cold Blood on there! I hope to read The Trial and Orlando some day.

I agree with you about Rushdie. He molds each sentence and phrase like he’s playing in a literary sand box.

My list would be completely different but I still thoroughly enjoyed this.

I would find room for Life and Fate by Vasily Grossman (with or without the prequel Stalingrad).

Although I adore Orlando, I feel that the style is more of a traditional one other than more experimental “modernist”. I probably would choose To the lighthouse, Mrs Dalloway or the waves as the modernist representative, which are all truly masterpieces.😊

I feel the way about Kafka as you feel about Gaskell (particularly Wives and Daughters).
