Something I'd add: the ascent path is by far the most important part. Often, you have to go lower and faster than you'd expect.

I did some exhaustive testing with an automated craft a little while ago

You forgot to add a heatshield inside the fairing and offset it right at the front tip of your spacecraft to protect it from overheating, and also put two magnetic docking ports close to each other in your cargo bay and jettison the front one from the ship while having it stuck in position by other parts, thus creating a perpetuum mobile kraken engine. I mean, if you're cheating, why not go all the way?

for bigger ssto, do you reccomand using multiple fairings? or just one?
In carrier, is the cost of the entire new craft (plus of the entire trip) lower than the previous one?
