AXA Chair in Neurosciences & Longevity

The brain is the most complex organ in our body and to a large extent is the key to our identity as human beings. It is the seat of intri-cate, multi-level interactions inherent to its function: from genes to neurons, from neurons to neural circuits, from neural circuits to perception, behavior, and consciousness. Yet despite the latest advances in neuroscience, getting a comprehensive view of brain development and function remains a major basic scientific question when considering the number of diseases left without any effi-cient therapeutic treatment.

The first axis of Prof. Vanderhaeghen's research will strive to uncover the mechanisms underlying the development of higher brain functions and how its alterations can lead to human diseases, while the second will try to use this knowledge to design innovative approaches towards brain repair.
