On Thursday, December 5, 2024, members of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) student chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers will observe, study, and share with the public the dynamics and dangers of Christmas tree fires by conducting a live demonstration in which they will set ablaze a real tree and an artificial tree side by side during controlled burns in a laboratory environment in WPI's Department of Fire Protection Engineering.

In this video, Christian Vogt with the WPI student SFPE chapter discusses the preparations for and the goals of the demonstration.

The students will measure the intensity of each fire and conduct this seasonal demonstration to stress the importance of proper fire prevention measures including daily watering of real trees and keeping trees away from any heat source.

In Sweden a lot of families still use actual lit candles on their trees. They only light them when they are in the room. I think that’s insane.
