Title was the biggest twist I have seen in years.

When I saw the title, I immediately clicked on it because I know how much you focus on philosophical conflict.

There is no other screenwriting and storytelling teacher better than you. You changed my life forever. I have never been afraid to write again. Thank you very much ❤

You've got the right word to say what I was thinking about stories for a certain time now : every good story, no matter the structure, the characters, the surface subject... Is a metaphor, a symbol about a subject which matters deeply to the writer and humanity as well.
Thank you again for your colossal work.

Your self-awareness is off the charts. I've never watched a video like this before; one where the advice INSPIRES me to write.

Spot on, Tyler. Philosophical conflict is fundamental, but it should emerge out of the characters: who they are, what they want and need, what they are struggling with/against and what type of world they live in. Everything else will fall into place.

I worry about you bud. You are a good teacher and I like hearing your perspective. I hope you have something to keep you grounded, other than your faith.

I have long been a fan of your videos, but it looks like you are a brother in Christ! Your study of the craft of screenwriting is an encouragement to me as an aspiring writer/director. Keep fighting the good fight!

Thank you so much Tyler for this liberating truth that lets us feel free to write and create and let the ideas in our heads come to life first before thinking about philosophical conflicts, I'm so glad I watched this 😊😊

Hey Tyler! I havent watched your videos in a while. Must have been a year by now... I took the advice on the philosophical aspect of the story very seriously and got stuck in this state of which you are talking abt, where you don't actually create a physical world rather than thinking of only philosophical conflict and questions for the screenplay.
I got out of it eventually after a few months and I am currently writing on my story.

So I read this title and it really catched my attention. Because you were always THE GUY to preach philosophical conflict.
And what youre saying in this video makes so much sense to me. Just getting into the writing process and creating the actual characters is what will build your philosophical conflict automatically. I never realized I did it in the "wrong" order. (Ik there is no real order, but i think you get what I mean, I just focused too much on one of the "three buckets")

What I'm trying to say is, I got many writing tips by you. And the fact that you're indirectly confirming the direction I took in my writing process is so nice to hear. I think you are one of the best writing channels on youtube, because you are always thinking about your own techniques, you keep improving them and never stop progressing. Keep making your content and keep helping people out with their scripts, youre really doing every one of us a huge favor by making these videos.

Have a great day :)

Don't doubt yourself. Whenever I start to, I come across something like this video & I'm reminded how I'm on the exact path I need to be.

I’ve watched a lot of your videos over a few years now which helped guided me to write a graphic novel. I just want to say thank you for your help and accessibility. Your advice then helped me out as a brand new writer and your advice now helps me go back and revise my story.

A lesson i learned recently or i guess came to understand better is "truth is not fixed, it expands" this video in contrast to your video in your writers mind podcast, is a perfect example of this. This video is extremely helpful thanks Tyler.

I figured that in terms of timelessness, the stories of the Bible (The Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son etc.) would be great to study as they’ve truly stood the test of time and appeal to so many people thousands of years later.

Thank you for this video. I watched one of your older videos 3 days ago and it shook me. I have spent close to a year on my story, studying story for much longer. I am 80-85% finished but that old video made me so very nearly delete my story completely. I will admit the old video has made me focus in more or certain aspects I can improve, but I needed this video as a compliment to say what I’ve started is ok. Work from there. Before this video I had already went back to make changes to my story, but I still had that background noise ringing in my mind that this is s lost cause. Thank you.

You can put THIS right into perspective with writing/developing character relations, specifically scenes that inform those relationships and ultimately create the Story/Narrative you are wanting to tell.

Thanks for taking the time to break that down for us man! Revolutionary for me becuz I've been needing an easier way to approach bringing conceptual brain and creative brain together. This just might do the trick. Appreciate you brother!

We’ve been going through similar things… I thousand times prefer this version of ‘writing’ and ‘you’ that has inspired so much so to write again, thanks once more.

I clicked this video so fast when I saw that title. This makes sense. I also would say that your teachings about philosophical conflict were still imperative. If anyone has read "Invisible Ink" by Brian McDonald, he provided an analogy about a caterpillar moving all of its legs at once, but didn't pay attention or notice that it was doing it. When the other animals praised it for being able to do that, he looked back at his legs and even questioned himself. Immediately, he fell down because he started thinking about it instead of letting it happen naturally. At the end of the book, after Brian teaches us everything he knows about writing, he says we have become like that centipede which can now move its legs again with confidence, but now understanding what it is really doing. I wouldn't even say so much "forget philosophical conflict" or that you have taught us wrongly. I think all the years of learning about philosophical conflict was helping us to get back on our feet; to understand what we were really doing before we got to walking again.
Thank you for posting this.

Fair point. I still feel it's helpful to roughly know where you're going with the overall philosophy, and let it naturally change or be refined as you go.
