I used to tie them straight to the line but I think a metal loop is really important to add. If you get a kastmaster with a rough cut, that hole will slice your line right off if a fish hits it. It's happened to me 3 times.

Kastmasters are my "go to" lure for everything. I always use a swivel and a straight retrieve works fine.

Just yesterday I was fishing the Mount Elbert Forebay above Twin Lakes, Colorado. Wasn't getting hits on dry or wet flies so went to a small gold Kastmaster on a Celilo/Underspin combo with 4lb fluoro. It took awhile to get my first take, so I switched from a slightly twitchy retrieve to an abrupt jigging action with slow reel-in to keep a tight line. Action picked up almost immediately and I hooked three pretty quickly before I had to move on. Jigging retrieve seems to be the key for bored trout holding deep.

Just yesterday I tied one with a loop knot and reeled slow and steady. The action was amazing. Looked pretty much exactly like a swimming bait fish. Never thought about the jerking motion though. I'll have to give it a try.

Maaan i love Kastmasters! This is so outdated, but so f'n effective lure... i mean it will catch every single predator fish there is! today it got me numerous perches in no time... no minnows, no plastic baits, just one golden 3gr. kastmaster... all day long! love it!
