You didn't mention Charlotte. I always thought it was sad that Lillian had to leave her at The Meadows when she married Bill Cutler, and she had to grow up with horrible Emily treating her like she did. I really enjoyed Charlotte in Midnight Whispers. Despite living with Emily for so long, she never lost her childlike innocence; and I think she was a lot smarter than anybody thought. In Midnight Whispers, out from under Emily's thumb, she seemed more intelligent than she was made out to be in Secrets of the Morning.

Probably the strongest book in the Cutler series but ends too soon - we don't get to see Lillian become the Grandmother Cutler from the first two books, we don't understand why she would send Dawn away as a baby after having to leave her own daughter behind when she got married, we don't even get an explanation of why she wanted to call Dawn 'Eugenia' after her beloved little sister when she supposedly despises Dawn and what she represents.

This was the first VC Andrews book I ever read. My older cousin left it on the coffee table I started reading it and was hooked. I spent the whole day reading the book from cover to cover. It to this day is still one of my favorite VC Andrews books. When I recommend V C Andrews I tell people to start with this book because I feel it give an idea of her writing style and can be a stand alone book.

Lillian really went through it. I felt awful for her. The level of PTSD that woman carried. I loved the book. My only complaint is that it ends a bit too abruptly. She had only started to become the cruel Grandmother Cutler we know from Dawn and Secrets of the Morning.

This book was so, so sad. The abuse Lillian endured is beyond tragic. And the fact her beloved adopted little sister, parents, and childhood sweetheart all perished when she was very young. No wonder she went nuts. In my opinion, this is the saddest V. C. Andrews novel.

It seems like Lillian was in a similar situation to Olivia Winfield, using her own trauma in youth to explain her harsh treatment of Dawn the way Olivia tried to explain her treatment of her grandchildren. In both cases, the grandmothers became obsessed with family status and reputation. Maybe because they thought that was the only substitute for the love that they had been denied?

I remember when reading this book how much I missed Dawn and know it lead into these characters but I grieved for Dawn 💀

I love how it's a standalone book as well as a prequel. That's pretty cool.
Ironic that you got inspired to crack open another Anne Rice book because I recently restarted Tale of the Body Theif by her, refreshing my memory on what I had already read from last year before I put it down unfinished for whatever reason it was.

Darkest Hour was my favourite of that series though hated the Captain (the adopted dad) more than Emily. I'd noticed the cards theory too: dreamy "not brother", abusive father, harridan grandmother, just varies who gets the role in that hand.

Late to your channel(love it thus far! Darkest Hour is my favorite out of the Cutler series and dare I say VC Andrews book period(and I've read almost all of them lol. )

Emily Booth, though 😂 Best villian ever, I wanted her to die the way she did poor Cotton 😭

Love your ideas of Emily's death. I hated her character. Only part I was disappointed with was how it never covered the circumstances leading up to Dawn's kidnapping

V.c.andrews is on my list, so many books so little time, haha. Have you got an Annabel doll replica? I'm sure I saw when you were showing the cover. 😯 Do you prefer Dollenganger series or the one you've just finished reading? Your such a good reader fitting all these books in to your schedule. Happy reading. 😊

I really enjoyed the book probably more than the first one "Dawn". But it still doesn't explain why Lilian would be so cruel to Dawn. In fact, I feel like she should have showed Dawn a little bit more compassion because of what she went through.

Man.. I got this book on audible to listen to at work, and I'm beyond bored. Also, it's clear that the author has never been around 4 and 5 year olds. 😂

I watched all the lifetime landry movies and I thought they were much better than the casteel ones! I am excited to see your thoughts on both the movies and books! Also I agree 100% Emily is TRASH!
