I heard this saying somewhere not sure where, so here it is. “The only drummer you need to be better than is the one you were yesterday “ Back in my younger days this I hate issue cross my mind. I promise if you Drum long enough this issue will pass. You become confident in your playing as time passes. Drumming is a lifetime learning process it never ends.

On an actual note, super helpful. I’ve spent most of my drumming career trying to sound like other drummers. And even setting up like them to the point where I recently started having back pain and stuff from my setup. Just last week I decided I’m gonna start tuning to the sound I like, playing grooves the way I feel them, and sitting the way my body actually wants to sit at a drum kit rather than the way others do it.

Very valuable insights here, Stephen. Man you're constantly putting out quality content. I really needed to hear this today. I think we as performers are incredibly critical of our own playing, and we definitely get into periods where we feel like our playing is stale. I've been in this funk for a week or two, but trying to play through it. Great video, brother! 👊

Get out of my head! I was thinking this yesterday. I started filming my practice sessions and whenever I feel like I’m not getting better or growing as a drummer, I play back those first few videos (as uncomfortable as they are to watch). I think watching them back and being able to see improvement keeps me going. Fantastic content as always, Thank you!

Thank you Stephen! I love your videos. I started drumming at the age of 45. I'm almost 50 now. I wish I could have started drumming when I was a kid. It's been a lifelong dream. I'm grateful to have the opportunity. I've wanted to quit many times because I feel like I started too late and I compare myself to people that have been playing for decades. Thank you for the positivity and encouragement!

This is something I struggle with everyday. I always think I can do better or sound better. Or should be doing something different. I try to use it as motivation to work harder. Thanks for sharing this with us. This is good stuff

During all the time I'm online I come across hundreds of videos 'helping to be a better drummer', showing grooves, fills, rudiments, etc. But this is by far the most useful I've seen in some time, sometimes only drumming and drumming is not enough. Thanks Stephen!

Hey Stephen .. great advice..I can relate to it so much.. I am 28 right now..started playing at 23.. so I have started a bit of gigging in small pubs and it feels so bad and embarrassing to mess up in this age u know..I get depressed ..I feel I try to practice when I get time from by daily office job..I have sacrificed my social life, yet nothing happens and sometimes I feel I am the weakest link in the band..that's a miserable feeling but yes I am still trying to improve myself..and get out there and prove my worth.. well sometimes I do have some gigs where I can play well and then it feels so good.but sometimes miserable things do happen u know and my lack of confidence also gets in the way of playing at my best ..but I will try to keep these things in mind that u mentioned .... Thank u ..u r awesome..I feel good now by listening to u...!!

I played drums for 10 years then played bass some friends in a band that I loved for 3 years. I constantly felt like this with my drummer at the time, and it always made me feel like giving up. Well fast forward, the band breaks up and I have nothing but time and my drums. It sure as hell feels like I'm back to Step 1, cause I didn't touch the kit for 3 years. But as of right, I'm just trudging onward, every time I've hit a little road block. I tweak my kit, retune, breathe and I'm at it again. But if I get there again, and I know I will. I'll come back here, thank you Stephen for this video

I think that most of the time that somebody is hating his drumming is when he really gets tired of the same beats, same fills, same sound etc. As people we hate routine it's a natural thing so what to do ? Pick new things, things that you can't even imagine to play, step by step you are going to get there if one dude could do it you can do it as well ! I find it really cool when I stop playing what I used to for the most part and study Samba or bossa nova rhythms and then try to make it my own thing I add more of ''my'' stuff in it and them boom it's something new that's way music it's so amazing and it will never have an end it's just when you find the way that makes you happy ! :)

I swear man, it seems like every time I feel some type of way about my playing or even if I’m in a rut, you come out with a video to help me get through those things lol one of my favorite channels not only about drumming, but also in a way about psychology behind the kit. Very introspective channel and I’m one to say that it rocks man.

I learn something many many years ago...it is at when i decide to start playing drums!! Not start learning to play drums!! Just start playing Drums from scratch!! A friend that he was a professional drummer say to me that "you must never play the same fills inside the beat, you must concentrate to put always new things inside the rythm and the conclusion of your playing will never be boring" from that point i do this always. It's something like an ace in my hand but never believe it for sure. That really helps!!

I learn something from every video you put out but ones like these are the most memorable. Playing is not just how you hit things, there is the “human” side. Very few teachers even acknowledge these things let alone try to express them in a way you can learn from them.
Thank you for all the good you put out every time you put out a new video.

I always try to remember that I'm my biggest fan when it comes to playing drums. I started playing because it was fun and I try to keep that mentality today 🥁🤘

I know I've messaged you personally on this subject. And I appreciate everything you told me, it really helped me. Thanks again.

This is great advice. I get bored with my sound and when i asked myself why, i discovered that I need more diverse fills so I can incorporate them for certain dynamics. I am now trying to focus on fills. Starting simple.
