its a leftover from sa1, in sa1 you had to charge the light speed dash using the spindash and thus that sound effect was added to signify the light dash being charged, it serves no purpose in sa2 due to the light dash not needing to be charged.

The Ancient Light power up also changes the spin dash. It doesn't just give you the ability to light speed attack, it gives those sparks to the spin dash, increasing the hitbox of the spin dash. You can kill enemies just by charging a spin dash next to them. Really that's actually more useful than the actual light speed attack

I bet this is because they were planning to make the Lightdash as it was in SA1, tied to the spindash. But then they changed it without removing the sound change

The light speed dash sound also plays in Sonic Adventure after you get the upgrade, it's kinda like that's the light speed dash sound effect 🤯

It's a holdover from the first game most likely. That sound indicated the dash was charging your lightspeed dash. Since the lightspeed dash is immediate in the sequel, it's kinda become a vestigial design feature.

This happens in SA1 as well

I guess that they made this to replicate SA1, but it makes more sense in SA1 itself, because to charge the Light Speed Dash in SA1 you need to hold the Spin Dash button, so it changes from the regular sound to the LSD charging sound

In SA2, since the LSD is activated by just pressing the action button, it doesn't make that much sense, however it still would make sense if the sound was replace only when getting the Ancient Light, since the Light Speed Attack in SA2 still requires you to charge a Spin Dash like it was in SA1

I like how sonic runs on the rings in this game instead of just flying along them

Want to hear something weirder? Shadow has TWO homing attack voice clips, one where he says "hweh" and in 2p mode he says "haough" check for yourself

maybe they wanted the lightspeed dash to work like in SA1 but they changed it mid development and that sound effect was a leftover

Just old school video game designs dude, and I think they are awesome

i wonder if there was something scrapped in development where the light speed shoes gave you the light dash *and* the lightspeed attack and the sound effect is supposed to denote sonic charging the lightspeed attack

SA1 Sonic charged the Lightspeed Dash through spin dashing. I'd guess they were going to have it work the same way in SA2 and gave it the new sound effect to represent that - but then changed it somewhere through development so you just needed a button press at the right time.
The sound effect then was then either an oversight, not removed when they changed how it worked, or left in as a nod to SA1 using the spindash to charge it.

Bro references Sonic Adventure 1 sound effects, but doesn't recognize the Sonic Adventure 1 sound effect.

The lightspeed attack is still present and performable by charging until he says ready, then releasing around enemies
