Puppies are a lot of work! She says she misses having one, but it’d probably be more accurate to say she misses having the one she had.

She knows this is a 15-year commitment and it's hard to just replace an old friend

She shouldn't be forced to keep the dog, but at the same time, watching how she holds the sweetie pie is so cute.

She seems like a strong, independent, woman with a really big heart.

The grandmother has every right to have her boundaries and a puppy is a huge commitment, especially for an older person!
I've found that many people aren't comfortable with the grieving process, which is understandable, but it's not good to encourage, let alone buy, someone a new pet before they're ready, which might never be the case anyway. ❤

Just because she was sad does not mean she wanted another one. Granny was ready to live her best life again.

It's just... Some people might not be ready to move on from their prior loss😅 dogs are like family, getting a new one when one has passed away feels like you're replacing their memory (even tho that's not true) but it still takes a while to work up to that. It's better if people get their new pet at their own pace

Please don't ever gift someone an animal. Especially if they've just lost their pet.

I lost my dog a few months ago after having him nearly 17 years, and even though this comes from a good place, I'd absolutely HATE this. I'm still grieving for my boy, and I'm sure she is too. I just don't know if I'll ever get another dog, the pain of losing them is just so immense. I'm completely lost without him. So to put the responsibility of another dog onto someone, especially during such a difficult period of loss, really isn't fair. She's also getting further into old age, potentially another 16/17 years of walking twice a day, and all the other responsibilities that come with it, at her age will be hard. So another reason why the decision should be hers.

It’s never a good idea to give pets as a surprise present

I understand what she feels...😭It's such an emotional and long commitment.

This is like giving a newborn baby to a fresh empty-nester and saying "I know how lonely you been feeling since the kids went off to college." 😬

I lost my dog buddy about 12 years ago. He was 15 years old. I still miss him. I don't want another one . I can't deal with the pain and after his death I still felt his presence for a long time.

This is why you don’t surprise people with animals! Also they could have considered adopting a shelter dog so she didn’t have to go through the puppy phase again. It’s a lot of work especially for an old lady.

Never get someone a responsibility they haven't agreed to.

This is what this teaches me, after someone/something passing away, you can't simply buy a new one. The memories and love from that being can never be replaced, only accompanied by new ones.

It isn’t fair to pick out a pet for someone. That’s a personal choice. When you’re old, you may not have the energy for training a puppy, especially. Also, many of us don’t want the chance of dying and leaving a pet with trauma of loss and an uncertain future.

Gifting someone 16 years of responsibility when they didn’t ask for it isn’t the best idea.

Pets should never be given as gifts without being asked for. It is often difficult for people to care for and afford pets as they get older even if they do miss the company of them.
