"Bake in hot oven until done" is my favorite almost-universal grandma's recipe instruction.

Yeah we're going to need a "Nobody wants to burn it Kevin" T-shirt. Or an apron.

My mom once found my great grandmother's recipe for "Mississippi Mudcake". It's chocolate cake with marshmallows and-- no joke-- called for at least three sticks of butter.

Some of the instructions on a family recipe were "add a pinch of vanilla, a dash of lemon, beat it until it looks like the squishy guy from that star wars movie and bake for a bit".

Yep..."til it's done" is a legitimate recipe instruction.

My dad once asked my mother "How do I know when it's done."..and my mom just said "Same way you know when a bucket's full."

Grandma's apple salad. We could figure out the salad easily enough, it was the DAMN dressing! Oh, its just a cooked dressing, which makes something that resembles Miracle Whip, when her dressing was yellow tingled and ALMOST looked like honey mustard. Kid you not, after she was gone, that next Christmas, Mom had a dream where Grandma and Grammy were having a discussion about Tumeric. Tried a pinch in the dressing and THAT WAS IT. Grandma had to have gotten a work release from heaven to come and whisper in Mom's ear so we could have Christmas dinner.

My Nanny, made THE best peanut brittle, in the world. I decided to try to make some at my home, 200 miles away. I called my Nanny for the recipe.
"Oh it's a couple of hand fulls of sugar, and some corn syrup, boil it for a while, till it looks right. Add the raw peanuts near the end and spread it out. Easy.", she said.
My Nanny is 4'10", withe tiny hands, I am 5'9" with big hands!.
"Nanny honey, just get a measuring cup down and pour it in and give me the measurements.", I suggested.
"Baby, I don't think I own a measuring cup.", Nanny said.
She just mailed me a double batch. :)

My great granny's recipes say things like "add enough flour to make a nice batter" and "be careful not to add too much leavening." Thanks for the help, Granny.

Several times, I stood by my Grampa to make his holiday stuffing, knowing that when he was gone, we'd need to know how to make it. As he threw in handfuls of this and that, I stopped him and measured, hoping to codify the "some 'o this, some 'o that" recipe in his head. I made it about 6 times myself after that, but it was never quite the same from one time to the next. How on earth does that work? Now, I do just like Grampa did. It tastes wonderful, but heaven help my kids when they go to makin' it.

Oddly enough, my grandmother actually figured out real measurements for everything. She made a whole cookbook of her mother's recipes with it. And that is another reason why I love my Grandma.

I would eat that cake. I would probably regret it for whatever remained of my life, but I would eat it and smile.

My grandmother measured all of the dry ingredients for her recipes in the palm of her hand! She just poured the wet ingredients in until it "looks right". I am forever amazed at the consistency of the flavor and texture of the food she produced. I miss her and her cooking very much.

I’m from New Zealand but I just binge watched almost all of your videos. Despite the fact that I didn’t relate to a single thing, they were great!

I have a ton of recipes written on old recipe card and envelopes that are exactly like this.

My Mammal's dumpling recipe called for 8 cups of flour. NOT any cup but, her tiny pink cooking cup. God I wish I knew how big that cup was.
