A lightbulb probably went off in a ton of heads when Dave put two and two together in that interview.

Heh heh I was looking for this exact thing because of an article claiming this was where Dave Grohl got the beat from, , Nice👍

Dave Grohl grew up around the DC area, and he was heavily influenced by go-go funk, which explains his love for the Gap Band,

He also borrowed Tony Thompson's intro in I'm coming out by Diana Ross on song for the dead by queens of the stone age. Its not exactly the same but the vibe is there. I think Dave's a genius drummer for knowing how to use it.

Its the same drum intro in Funkadelic’s “Not just Knee deep”..

We looked at it in the day as almost hard disco which was funk. Cameo, Gap, Rick James etc all carried a heavier beat than Donna Summer and Chic. The funk phase shifted to "house" music in around 1985. Of course at the same time was electronic bands like New Order, Depeche all the through to today's music. All I believe Dave is saying is he enjoyed heavy beat music. Most of us did and still do. We also at the time listened to Kiss, Rolling Stones and Zepplin. Nothing wrong with understanding the roots of heavy beat music. Not heavy lead guitar or metal. Dave's being honest. IMO.

Yes, the Nirvana drummer confirmed that he copied several songs from Gad Bang and Tony Thompson on the disco wave
