A taxpayer funded time share overseas accommodation for elite athletes.

I'd want a list of who went there, cos I bet shitloads of not so important hangers on were taken there to.

The European AIS facility is totally necessary for elite athletes. To compete at an elite level within Australia is a very expensive task. It costs a couple of hundred dollars in petrol and takes around at least 8 hours to drive from capital to capital, or it costs hundreds more to fly, hire a car, pay for accommodation and compete. This needs to be done on a regular basis to get good enough to break into a national team, THEN things get really expensive when you start competing overseas. Compare that with Europe, where you can jump in a car, drive for 30 minutes and attend an international competition. Having a European training center is essential for Australian athletes.
