See the inner workings of a 1953 Bolnes marine diesel engine, built by the Dutch company Bolnes - now Stork Wartsila - for a fishing boat. This model was unique as it used welded instead of cast components for cost and weight reasons, now on show in Rotterdam at the Maritime Museum.

Bolnes is named after the hamlet near Rotterdam (now incorporated in Ridderkerk) where "Machinefabriek Bolnes" was originally located. They were taken over by Stork Wärtsilä in 1988 who closed the factory in 1989.
A friend of mine is running a former foot ferry boat which has a similar engine. There is no starter but they use pressurised air to start the engine. It's a real treat to see such and old engine running.

Is that running on compressed air, or extremely clean diesel?

Just take the engine and build a car around it! Could be fun... ;-) Maybe you have something suitable parking around...
