Coronavirus | Which mask will protect you? (N95 Masks vs Surgical Masks)

In this lesson, let’s talk about which masks are the most effective in preventing viral infections, and which one Luke is planning to buy. The two most common are N95 and surgical masks. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, and the recent announcement from the WHO declaring it a global emergency, it may be time to start considering a mask for yourself.

I think Surgical mask are better than N-95 mask

air enters through the surgical mask, but your breathing is contained so YOU don't spread germs, the N 95 mask filters the air you breath. The proper mask to wear when you are sick is the surgical mask and the N95 mask is worn so you do not get infected. It would also help to wear latex disposable gloves when in public places.

We call it N ninety five masks in the hospital I work in. In Canada! We need to be fit tested for our N95 masks it has to be a perfect fit. It’s not like a grab and go kinda mask.

Respirator masks are also disposable unless you get a permanent one and you properly disinfect it. For a more economical approach I'd really look into making them. You can make them with papertowels and rubberbands. If you can sew you can make a cloth one (probably good to make several and wash them daily).

If you really want protection, i would a recommend a half face mask at least, from a brand like 3m or something

Good job on being ahead of most people on this. January 30, 2020, that's impressively proactive. I'm not a researcher, but I can readily see that the study with the students should have had a control group that didn't wear a mask. The study with the nurses, some of the cases of catching the flu, and perhaps many, might have happened when they were not at work and not wearing a mask. If that is NOT the case, then I would want something that has a much lower failure rate than 1 in 4.5, if I had to work as a nurse.

To be honest I prefer a respirator mask over a surgical mask any day, especially if I'm going to be wearing it all day long either inside and/or outdoor, because unlike a surgical mask I can breathe freely without having to worry about my glasses fogging up on me.

I went for a few FFP3, they are valved so this may or may not be an issue

Most respirators are single use as well. Only up to a couple of shifts. I have read a study that UV light can decontaminate the respirator for a couple of times.
Get a half face mask or full face mask with replaceable filters, its much cheaper in the end.
Get some goggles or a face shield, its equally important.
What a mask or respirator does, is that it prohibits you from touching your face. Which is the most probable way of getting viral particles into your body.

Would a north 7700 series respirator work? Use it for work but if it works ofcourse I'd use it..
