The real lowdown on how I learned Spanish!

How I really learned Spanish (fast and easy!). The way in which I began to learn Spanish can be summed up very easily: comprehensible input. Listening to and reading stories, conversations, and relevant material that I knew I would need to apply to speaking, I acquired language very naturally and relatively quickly and easily, which helped me ease into conversations with less fear faster (within a few months). In this video, we discuss the meaning of comprehensible input and the effect that it will have on your Spanish language learning journey.

Actually that's how my daughter learned. She graduated HS with language honors and now conducts mental health therapy in Spanish. It can be done! Bravo to you!

Just hearing you speak Spanish so fluently really inspires me. I've studied Spanish for years but rarely spoke it because I felt so insecure, especially among native speakers. So I have this internalized Spanish. For me, it's more so overcoming my fears and worrying about understanding every single word and remembering vocab to use in conversations. I need to get back to daily immersion. I just want some Destino-like show from this millennium.

My hubby speaks Spanish as a third language. I studied in high school and college. I got an A but still feel like I can barely speak or remember anything. My hubby was told by a college Spanish professor that he would never learn Spanish. So he went to Ecuador fir the summer, stayed with a host family and took classes for two months. He came back fluent. He was determined. He built his vocabulary over time. Of course he made that professor eat cake. lol Moral if the story you can do anything you set your mind to. Don’t let anyone or yourself stop you from achieving any goals. Let’s learn some Spanish.

A side note for self taught language learners....in some languages there's the "standard" vernacular, then there's the common usage lingo. You come across this in Netflix movies, on the street, and music, etc. After learning grammar and vocab, don't be too alarmed when you hear people breaking all kinds of language rules, omitting stuff, phrases that have certain context, etc. Some of it can be learned from books and videos, others from people...it's an ongoing process. I'm not talking about dialects, but that also is a thing to be aware of.

My parents met in Germany during the war, so when my mom came to the US, my dad told her to watch I Love Lucy and try to repeat what she understood, that’s how she learned English . They are were so cute ❤️

Hi! Your video resonated with me, because, although I'm now 78 years old (!) I've always wanted to learn Spanish & haven't given up yet! Like you, I discovered Destinos a couple years ago, and that helped somewhat. But being older definitely does make it more difficult! When I was in high school, I wanted so badly to take Spanish! I played the guitar and thought it would be cool to go to Mexico and share my music with the people there. But my mother insisted I take French, saying it would be more useful. Well - God rest her soul - she couldn't have been more wrong! Spanish IS the language to learn in the U.S., because of the # of Spanish speakers we have now. After 2 years of French in high school (not taught by a native speaker) and one year in college, I couldn't even make myself understood when, in Quebec, I asked to use the rest room in French, and they had no idea what I was saying. Anyway, it won't surprise you to learn that I married a Spanish teacher! He spoke really good Spanish. I begged him to teach me, but he'd never teach me more than a few simple words and phrases. When he was eligible for a sabbatical, I suggested that we spend the year in Mexico so he could hone his Spanish, and I and the kids could learn. But he refused. I finally realized that he was afraid that somehow I would surpass him. Being a male chauvanist, he resented my intellectual ability. Well, as you can imagine, my marriage finally broke up. My son married a woman from Colombia who speaks beautiful Spanish, and I'd love to converse with her. But it is really hard! I believe that Spanish is a very difficult language. I have a lot of respect for you, and will use your videos. Thanks for all you do.

Hello Erica. I'm on my quest to learning Spanish. As an American I've tried my hand at languages that Americans don't need. One faithful day 3 years ago I started working with a deaf woman who changed my life. Learning asl gives me now the confidence to learn spanish. My end goal fluent ASL and LSM and Spanish. Now I go find Destino

I learned Spanish in high school at 14, but my trips and living part time in Acapulco, Malaga, Puerto Rico etc. helped me, and you must have Spanish speaker friends. The novelas help and the famous songs of Celia Cruz, Lucho Gatica, Vicente Fernandez etc.
