Note to self:
The spinal cord ends at the L1/L2 level. The end of the spinal cord is called the conus medullaris. However, the nerve roots of the lumbar and sacral spine still continues down to innervate the lower limb via structures called the caudal equina. "Caudal" referring to how it is literally in the direction of the 'tail', and "equina" referring to horse. So, horse's tail.
The caudal equina is inside the space called the lumbar cistern which has cerebrospinal fluid inside. The caudal equina is free-floating inside the lumbar cistern. Lumbar taps (where you insert a needle into the lumbar cistern and take out some fluid) are safe as the roots of the caudal equina can easily be moved out of the way without damage.

OMG. I love it. Could you show one with a damaged spinal cord? One that shows scarred tissue? Maybe a pinched spine instead of severed?

I definitely had to watch this because I have been dealing with a horrible case of sciatica due to a herniated disc in my lower spine. I just started going to a orthopedic clinic for this and found that a few of my vertebrae in my lower back were stacked up straight instead of curved and I was told it was probably from an injury and it is causing compression on my disc and the herniation of it is pressing into my sciatic nerve. Awful unbearable pain.

I appreciate the educational perspective of these clips and I am thankful for the body donor. I thank you both.

As a 24 year old male about to get spinal surgery for 3 of these herniated discs causing some pretty intense sciatica, this really helped me get a better understanding of what’s happening in my back. Thanks!
