The cat petting is entirely a reference to The Godfather where Vito Corleone pet a cat in the opening scene, which itself was actually improvised when a cat on set jumped into Marlon Brando's lap in the middle of it. He was such a good, natural actor that he just rolled with it and made it work perfectly.
