I learned how to garden, can and pickle stuff from my grandmothers but adulthood got in the way. Now that I’m in my late 50’s I’m starting to get back into it. Wish I would have paid even more attention to what they were trying to teach me.

I love the Foxfire books! They are very relevant to me. My childhood was spent doing many of the things in the books. I especially loved hog killin’ day!

I would love the book series. I love learning the ways of those who came before us. I Love all the history. I worked in a nursing home where I’d hear all kinds of precious stories of the past. My oldest patient was 104 years old 💗

My Grandpa had the Foxfire Books, not the whole set but certain books. Looking forward to anything you want to share from the series. I didn't think we had bears in Ohio either or maybe just in southern Ohio but black bears have been sighted in Delaware County a few times.

A Haint is like a ghost or evil spirit. I saw this set back in North Carolina in 93’ (stationed at Ft Bragg) but didn’t have the money to get it. A girlfriend had family that ate squirrel, raccoon, and turtle and I was looking at recipes. I forgot the name of the set sadly and never saw another set in the Northwest and Texas where I now reside. I recently found the books online and recognized an old covered version. Can’t wait to get this edition for my 1905 two story farmhouse/homestead.

Yes. I used to have all the books many years ago. My father was born and raised in Dalton, Georgia, and as a child I was exposed to much Appalachian culture. The books are amazing and to some degree they are life-changing. In the old days the Appalachian hill-folk were much better equipped to survive deprivation than city-dwellers are today.

Funny you mentioned deep fried rattlesnake! I’ve actually tasted it when I visited the Claxton GA Rattlesnake Roundup one time…tasted much like 🐓😊…The history of that event is that someone there got bit by a rattlesnake and no anti venom was available so they started the roundup to catch the large snakes and “milk” them to make the anti venom from. It was very interesting to watch the process despite my extreme fear of the snakes.

I had a few Fox Fire books. Loved them. I loved the book Christy by Catherine Marshall. My husband took me to find where she lived and taught school. This was on our honeymoon back 20 years ago ...over close to the Smokies. I love that time Era. My family were mountain people back in the day. I loved the Waltons and Little 🏠 🏚 🏡 House on the Prairie.

Your family story is very similar to mine. My mom grew up in Southwest Missouri. My grandma knew all those things you talk about your grandma knowing. My mom knew some of it, and I learned practically none of it. Wish I knew those things now.

I've got the 14 book set, and I think I paid $45 shipped via eBay, also run my eBay purchases through a cash back app, however.

You are absolutely correct about "spirits". My hubs has quite the collection of different kinds he has "made" {clears throat} for the specific reason of bartering.

I too, have the Foxfire series in my "library" - I think they are a good asset to have. Loved the history of your grandparents.

My son in law gifted me with the 40th Edition Foxfire Book, it’s so good! We sure have a lot in common, my grandfather was a 50 year Pentecostal minister…much of my young life was listening to his sermons and wonderful guitar singing, leading his congregation in worship..❤️ I remember watching him on his small farm wring a chickens neck and the body of the hen running around…I watched my mamaw pluck and process it on her back porch kitchen, not the one inside….lol. I couldn’t eat chicken for a very long time after that! Haha. I love hearing and learning anything from our southern past…my mother was raised in western KY and and my father in eastern KY…my roots run deep….I’m going to purchase some more Foxfire books from Lehman’s, we enjoy visiting their store in Kidron. You might enjoy Celebrating Appalachia on YouTube, Tipper Pressley is such a sweet lady. She also has a blog called The Blind Pig and the Acorn. 🙂

RAY-burn Gap is how we say it down here. Love that place. There is a Foxfire museum there.

My favorite books were the first 4 books. The Foxfire Book, book 1, 2, 3. I lived in a 2 room cabin in upstate NY and used them throughout the years there.

Thank you for this video. My Grandpa Love just recently told me about the Foxfire book series he read as a kid. This was very insightful & informative.

I went to Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School for 5 years. I spent every summer working on the farm, being a janitor, helping to earn money to help pay for my tuition.
I do embrace my Appalachian upbringing.
