For this science news video, we'll be talking about another exciting discovery in science about the rate of expansion of the universe that has scientists saying it's the most exciting development in cosmology in decades.

We'll be covering the SH0ES project, the Araucaria project, how the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is coming up short from today's observations, and the new method of imaging the sky called Drift and Shift (DASH) using NASA/ESA's Hubble Space Telescope that led to this discovery.

Enjoy!

This channel should have more subscribers! You break things down perfectly so that people with little scientific knowledge are aware of what's going on. Thank you for your great work

Wow lots of interesting stuff going on.

It's great that we have so many highly intelligent and dedicated people helping to further our understanding of the universe.

Thanks for the update and all that you do for the science community. We are still just infants in the exploration of space. Keep up the good work.

Our technology seems to be keeping pace with the expansion of the universe. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the IAU. At that point, the discovery of Pluto would still be 11 years in the future! (Don't worry, Pluto- you will forever be a planet in my heart!)
We are really in our scientific infancy. Where will we be in 2119?

Hi Jon.
How can I communicate with you? I don't have Twitter or FB. I have a dilemma I need to speak to someone about. Maybe email? Let me know.

Another nice presentation. 👏👏👏👏. I love learning more about the cosmic microwave background and the Big Bang.

Great video, interesting stuff.
Maybe the universe doesn't expand uniformly, simultaneously or even at a constant accelerate rate.

One hypothesis you missed is that light losses energy and redshifts as it travels through the ether medium. Objects in our galaxy are measured with triangulation or parallax and the distances there are more accurate. Anything beyond our galaxy is typically measure by redshift estimates for how far they are away.
The light can appear redshifted due to doppler effect, but it can also be redshifted as light loses momentum to a medium.
What they are doing now is assuming there is no redshift due to light travelling through a medium and assuming that redshift equates to something traveling away from us. Some quasars are redshifted enough that they would have to be travelling faster than the speed of light, so we know there is probably something wrong with the redshift model.
Here is the problem with comparing blue and red shift of binary stars, to light coming from a large Magellanic clouds. What we are seeing in a binary is blue shift due to at star moving towards us, a doppler shift, and redshift for a star moving away. Light from Magellanic clouds suffers a different fate, the light from red sources refracts less than blue does. So since they did not take these effects into account, it appears that red sources are even father away then they really are, and blue sources are closer than they really are. That exponentially expounds the error, since they attribute the redshift to the speed and not the refraction.
