Darn it, I missed that note! So I guess I’ll just play something that no one else can play for about five bars to make up for it…

"I can't lie to you about your chances of successfully following a Michael Brecker solo, but you have my sympathies." - Ash, Alien 1979.

He was a classic 'woodshedder'....dude use to practice until his lips fell off...few will ever be a Brecker he so committed to his craft

Even David Sanborn once said he had to follow after Michael Brecker solo and said, "How am I going to top that?"

He was the Goat on tenor trane all the way with a hurricane following him . A master technician with all the low registers to over the top on one stroke he surpassed smoking Joe Henderson I regretted not going up to speak to him in person in a NY club back in the day .Always in control of these whirl wind solos with circular breathing. He busted out of the Brecker brothers and hanged out with McCoy Tyner and kept it straight as a arrow.A true Master sax player .Last thing he mastered the soprano sax on the swan song. RIP

What bob Mintzer did in giant steps after brecker in the album twin tenors is one of the greatest examples on what to do after a brecker solo; try a completely different approach

Not only was he a genius saxophonist but he was a very sweet guy.

I always loved Michael and now, so many years later, to see pros acclaim for him, just wow, simply wow. Saw him in many iterations but as a member of the AllStars at Saratoga, Summer of 1978, Sonny and Dexter were part of the sax crew, as well as Michael with Dizzy leading. They were playing Night in Tunisia. The highlight was Larry Coryells Hendrixesque lead break but the horns were trading riffs as well and they were all shining brightly.

This is probably one of the biggest heartbreaks for jazz. So far ahead of his time. If you didn't love him you didn't understand him. Lost him way to early.
